Florida Gulf Coast University Civic Engagement students brought together three community partners so that local children in need would have more books to read.
Lexington Middle School students and staff collected the books – three overflowing basketfuls – for K is for Kids Foundation to distribute to local children. With the helping hands of the FGCU students, a table was set up for a unique book giveaway for Harlem Heights Children participating in the “Fourth Friday” Autumn Festival held at the Heights Center on October 25th. Fellow FGCU early admissions student Erik Tryzna came to help, too. In addition to choosing new books to take home, youngsters also wrote stories in construction paper “books”.
Timoney, family entertainer, sent in hundreds of twisted balloons for the children to take home, too.
K is for Kids would like to thank the continuing support of FGCU students in the Foundation’s mission of building readers and leaders, “We are blessed to have students from FGCU join our cause. Their passion and desire to help the children of their community are matched only by their drive and dedication. Cam, Ashlee and Charisa – with the help of students and staff at Lexington Middle School – pulled out all the stops. Their book drive, along with children’s books donated by local authors, topped out at $1,000 in books for kids. And they did it all in less than a month. Great project, great ‘kids’ all around!”
